Elegant WP Design

Date: 08/21/2005 Category: WordPress
This is a gorgeous example of a WordPress-powered site featuring the author’s photography. It’s not immediately apparent that this is a WordPress site, or that it is powered by a CMS at all. Simply beautiful. www.brianlarter.com

Open Season on Open Source

I’ve been watching the skirmishes with regard to Mambo for awhile now, regarding the copyright fights that have been going on for months. (If you went to www.mamboserver.com in the past six months or so, you saw the disclaimers there.) Now it looks like the core Mambo developers, not happy with being shut out by [...]

WP Plugin Review

Date: 08/16/2005 Category: WordPress
My rating: 4 out of 5

I just stumbled onto this great plugin while browsing the :wps:! This is a dream come true for someone like me, who offers design templates for download. Before, I was using a complicated script that was a PITA to update every time I added a new file. But I liked it because it forced the user to furnish a valid email address which it used to email the zip file to the user. You see, it’s important to me to be able to keep track of people downloading my templates, if for no other reason than to notify them of any changes or updates.

Enter Kaf Oseo’s Download Manager. I now have the ability, if I so choose, to set a user level that is necessary for someone to download my template. I will probably allow the lowest user level, but I will want folks to register to download, for the reasons set forth above.

Linking your file to Download Manager is as easy as remembering a couple of keystrokes: /?dl=[yourfilename]. It’s in operation on my two template entries. I’m looking forward to getting a lot of mileage out of this excellent plugin. Other users have reported a wishlist item, and that is the ability to publicly indicate the most popular download(s). For me that is not an issue, but for others, I can see where it might be. Still, I think this plugin rates an enthusiastic “4″ from me for its utter simplicity and drop and go installation. Thanks, Kafkaesqui!

There’s a brand new release that makes the above patch moot. You are strongly urged to perform this upgrade as soon as possible, especially [...]

Adios TextPattern, Hello WordPress!

Date: 08/06/2005 Category: TextPattern,WordPress
After much consideration, I’ve decided to convert webjones.org to WordPress 1.5. Originally, the site was running a perverted combination of MT 2.64, Greymatter and plain ole HTML. Around the time I converted my blog to WordPress, I wanted a change at webjones.org. But I was just starting out with WordPress and at the time, it [...]
